Local nonprofits make a bigger IMPACT with $40,000 award from GSK in Greater Philadelphia region

Issued: Philadelphia, PA

GSK and The Philadelphia Foundation today issued the call for applications for the 2018 GSK IMPACT Awards. This annual awards program recognizes local nonprofit organizations that are breaking down health barriers in communities across the five-county region.

“Local nonprofit organizations make Greater Philadelphia a healthier place to live and work,” said Becki Lynch, Acting Director, Community Partnerships, GSK. “Through our GSK IMPACT Awards program, we celebrate organizations that help our neighbors access healthy foods and stay active, find high-quality jobs and education, and strengthen their family and social supports – because we know that these things are fundamental to a healthy community.”

A $40,000 GSK IMPACT Award can go a long way for a local nonprofit. Local sports-based youth development nonprofit, SquashSmarts (@SquashSmarts) won in 2016: “The GSK IMPACT Award was a game-changer for SquashSmarts. It’s a truly thoughtful, intentional and powerful award that left a mark on each level of our non-profit: from our student-athletes, to our staff, to our leadership, to our overall way of thinking,” said Stephen Gregg, Executive Director of SquashSmarts. “GSK’s financial support enabled SquashSmarts to provide intensive, year-round tutoring and squash instruction to 143 children from our Philadelphia public schools.”

The GSK IMPACT Awards honor effective nonprofit organizations that are working hand-in-hand with the community to make neighborhoods healthier. The GSK IMPACT Awards program is one of several charitable programs GSK offers in the US as part of a commitment to building healthier communities and a healthy America. This is the 22nd year of the program and to date over $10 million has been awarded across Greater Philadelphia and the Triangle, NC region. This year, GSK is proud to partner with The Philadelphia Foundation (TPF) in the administration of the awards.

“We’re proud to continue our partnership with GSK on not only the IMPACT Awards, but also GSK Opportunity Scholarships and the collective Get HYPE Philly! Initiative,” said Pedro A. Ramos, President and CEO of The Philadelphia Foundation. “GSK sets a stellar example of corporate community commitment and leadership. The organizations that receive these awards are highly effective and rooted in the community, often providing direct service to some of our region’s most vulnerable residents.”
