October marks National Breast Cancer Awareness Month – a time to focus on early detection, annual screenings and the most recent advances in treatment. Education efforts this month aim to further enforce that with these tools, many women may have an increased chance of success and survival.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the U.S, and this year approximately 40,000 women are expected to die from this devastating disease1. But each year brings more hope. Through proper exams and mammograms, women are being diagnosed earlier and the most current treatments are providing a world of hope to those already diagnosed.
The American Cancer Society recommends women perform a monthly breast self-exam beginning as early as age 20, and by age 40 annual mammograms are recommended.
Women of all ages can make a difference in the fight against breast cancer not just this month, but all year long, by taking charge of their health, committing to regular exams for themselves, and also encouraging friends and family to do the same.
To support this month and the many people touched by this disease, GSK is proud to illuminate its Philadelphia headquarters in pink throughout October. We are committed to helping to raise awareness about breast cancer and to continuing to support the fight against this disease.
