GlaxoSmithKline Receives Perfect Score on Corporate Equality Index

Issued: Tuesday, September 22, 2009                          Philadelphia, PA

For the fifth consecutive year, GlaxoSmithKline has been named as one of the "Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality" by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). This distinction is awarded to 305 businesses in the U.S. that scored 100 percent on the HRC Foundation's 2010 Corporate Equality Index, the primary method for businesses to benchmark and evaluate their non-discrimination policies, benefits, practices and diversity training efforts relating to LGBT workers.

GSK achieves its perfect score by including gender identity and expression in its non-discrimination policies, offering diversity training in topics of sexual orientation, providing benefit coverage for partners, engaging in appropriate and respectful advertising and marketing, sponsoring LGBT organizations and community events, and having an established Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Employee Network (GLBT).

The GLBT Employee Network has been instrumental in providing a supportive, nurturing forum and were proud to introduce GSK employees to SafeZone, a program that aims to create employee dialog about the challenges faced by GLBT employees in the workplace. Through half-day trainings, GSK employees learn how to create a more inclusive and empowered work environment through informal discussion and role playing. After the course, participants receive a SafeZone magnet to display in their work spaces indicating acceptance of the GLBT community and a commitment to be personally responsible for creating a safe and supportive environment for all employees.

"It is an honor for GSK to attain this achievement again this year.  It is personally satisfying to be a part of an organization which seeks to empower its people by striving to ensure an inclusive work environment," said Ted Furman, Executive Sponsor of GSK's Philadelphia area GLBT Employee Network and Co-Chair of GSK Legal's Diversity and Inclusion Steering Team.
