Health and well-being in our communities

We aim to make a difference to communities through economic contribution, investment, education programs and innovative partnerships. In 2012 we invested £206 million in communities around the world.

Here in the US, we are committed to building healthier communities. Much of what influences our health happens outside the doctor’s office – in our communities. Community factors, such as safety, access to healthy foods and recreational spaces, and the support of families and social networks, undeniably contribute to our health. Where we are born and raised, where we live and work, matters to our health.

Yet too many kids are growing up in communities that are hazardous to their health. That’s why we are working with nonprofit groups on targeted, long-term initiatives in Metro Denver, Greater St. Louis, the Greater Triangle Region in North Carolina, and Philadelphia.

Across the world, we invest in programs that increase access to health and wellbeing and improve outcomes for whole communities. Our flagship hygiene program PHASE integrates hand washing and oral health training into community education initiatives and has reached over 1.5 million children worldwide. In the Least Developed Countries we reinvest 20% of any profit we make to build healthcare infrastructure.

We maximize the benefits of our community investment by working in partnership with NGOs and by selecting projects that enable us to use our expertise and resources. As well as benefiting communities, our investment strengthens our business by improving our reputation; boosting employee morale and helping us build relationships with a range of stakeholders.

Our philosophy is to target support on selected health and educational programs that are innovative, sustainable and produce tangible results. The programs we support share our vision of enhancing healthcare, and where possible they offer opportunities to involve GSK employees in assisting communities where we do business.

Humanitarian support

The amount of products donated depends on demand. In 2013 we supported humanitarian relief efforts in 87 countries across the globe, as well as responding to ten major disasters with our medicine donations. These included supplies of antibiotics and basic medicines to those affected by conflicts and natural disasters, such as the earthquake in Pakistan.

GSK also responded to the typhoon in the Philippines by providing $1.8million of donated medicines, a cash donation of $279,000 as well as local staff volunteering to support affected communities.

While the majority of aid is shipped to developing countries, last year we also contributed to vulnerable populations hit by the Oklahoma tornado, and wildfires in the USA.
