Chemical Compound Operator apprenticeships

Our R&D Apprentice Program is designed to create the science manufacturing technicians of the future.

Whether we are developing a new treatment, improving the taste of one of our consumer products, or testing the effects of a nutritional product, the laboratory is home to all of these activities. We have an R&D laboratory apprenticeship program designed to equip you with the skills you need to tackle a variety of scientific challenges.

As a Chemical Compound Operator apprentice you will work within our R&D pilot plant facilities where we manufacture oral solid dose (tablets and capsules) and respiratory (inhalers, capsules and intranasal devices) drug products for clinical trials and other investigational purposes.

Our Chemical Compound Operator apprenticeship offers you the chance to study towards nationally recognized qualifications while gaining valuable, paid work experience. Our apprenticeship program is designed to create the science manufacturing technicians of the future.

Candidate eligibility:

  • Must have a High School diploma or GED 
  • Candidate must be currently enrolled, or if offered a position enrolled prior to GSK stated start date, in an Associate Degree Program with one of GSK’s partnering community colleges or technical institutions.

Our Chemical Compound Operator apprenticeship lasts for three years and provides highly motivated students with hands-on experience in a science and manufacturing discipline. You will have the opportunity to play a key role in improving the quality of human lives by enabling people to do more, feel better, live longer.  

All apprentices in the Chemical Compound Operator Apprentice Program will work towards an Associate’s Degree at one of GSK’s partnering community colleges or technical institutions  with the potential to go on to further study.

What you will be doing:

As a Chemical Compound Operator apprentice you will develop the skills and knowledge required to operate the systems and equipment that produce our consumer and pharmaceutical products.  You will learn how to perform manufacturing operations in chemical R&D pilot plants in order to develop chemical processes and prepare chemical supplies for R&D studies in compliance with safety and quality regulations. 

Your apprenticeship will combine a series of on-site job rotations with a program of training and development. Your role might involve:

  • Identifying areas for improvement
  • Root causing problems
  • Supporting manufacturing processes
  • Supporting the design, introduction, validation and commissioning of new process equipment
  • Ensuring quality, safety and accuracy

The Chemical Compound Operator apprenticeship is offered at our R&D site in Collegeville (Upper Providence), PA. 

When does the apprenticeship start?

Our apprenticeships start in September 2018.
