Think about the days when you feel really healthy. Are they the same days that you visit the doctor? Or are they the days that you ate a lot of fresh vegetables, took a walk through the neighborhood, helped a neighbor, or did a great job at work or in class?
Although access to great care and medicines are important to our health, what may have an even greater affect on our health are healthy behaviors, access to resources, and being able to support ourselves, our families, and our communities every day.
That’s why for 20 years, GSK has supported the GSK IMPACT Awards, which recognize local nonprofit organizations in our hometowns of Greater Philadelphia, PA and the Triangle Region, NC that are working to improve health hand-in-hand with the community. Over those 20 years, we have moved from supporting organizations that improve health inside the doctor’s office to those that improve health outside, in our neighborhoods.
Last year, we awarded 20 incredible organizations that are making Greater Philadelphia and the Triangle Regions healthier by improving everyday health factors and demonstrating excellence in achieving results – read more about some of our 2016 GSK IMPACT Award winners:
Across Philadelphia, schools are missing after-school sports programs. Enter Beat the Streets Philadelphia – not just a wrestling program for over a thousand Philadelphia boys and girls, but a comprehensive support system that includes nutrition education, academic mentorship, and leadership development. Beat the Streets is a great example of how sports can nurture the whole child and improve their overall health outcomes.
Without an affordable and safe place to come home to each day, individuals and families are unable to focus on addressing their health needs. Rebuilding Together of the Triangle harnesses the power of local businesses and volunteers to make homes more accessible for elderly residents, safer for children, and functional for the whole family. Rebuilding Together shows that where we live affects our health and that we can improve outcomes one house at a time.
And these are just a few! Over $800,000 was awarded last year to exceptional nonprofit organizations through the GSK IMPACT Awards – learn about all of our 2016 winners:
