EDCI Youth Leadership Council
Empowering young people to make their East Durham community healthier
GSK is proud to support the East Durham Children’s Initiative (EDCI)’s Youth Leadership Council, a weekly after-school program that empowers East Durham elementary and middle school students to improve their own health and their community via youth-led solutions to neighborhood health challenges.
EDCI piloted the Youth Leadership Council in 2016 with a grant from GSK, working with 60 East Durham 4th and 5th grade students to increase their physical activity and consumption of healthy foods. Students participated in educational workshops delivered by local partners and launched programs of their own. Students who participated in YLC reported that they are now eating more fruits and vegetables and have increased weekly physical activity – and so did their families!
During the first year of the Youth Leadership Council pilot, EDCI worked with students to identify other issues that were affecting the health of people in East Durham, including emotional health, sexual and reproductive health, and improving community safety.
Now with GSK’s support, YLC will expand to serve another 120 students over the next two years, and will launch the East Durham Adolescent Health Collaborative, a cross-sector group of experts who will create a roadmap to improve health for young people in East Durham.
