Patients first

At 20 sites around the world, 15,000 people are dedicated to discovering and developing new medicines that help improve the quality of life for patients. We put patients first, always remembering that patients are waiting for our medicines.

We're currently focused on these major areas of research:

  • Cardiovascular and urogenital diseases
  • Metabolic and viral diseases
  • Microbial, musculoskeletal and proliferative diseases
  • Neurological and gastrointestinal diseases
  • Psychiatric diseases
  • Respiratory and inflammatory diseases
  • Vaccines

Research

Research has led to some significant recent advances that have helped many patients. For example:

  • A new cancer medicine that targets an enzyme in cancer cells - but leaves normal cells largely unharmed
  • A new class of cholesterol medicines that work in the small intestine to keep cholesterol from entering the liver
  • A new class of HIV medicines, called fusion inhibitors, that block HIV from attaching to healthy cells-and prevent HIV from multiplying
  • A new vaccine to tackle a virus that claims more than 600,000 children a year worldwide
  • New experimental vaccines that target the HPV virus, a primary cause of cervical cancer in women
